What happens when you plug an external HDD or USB flash drive into your Mac:
- Dragging files onto the drive shows a forbidden symbol — they just won't go in
- You can open the drive and see your files, but can't delete, rename, or edit them
- No "New Folder" in the right-click menu, and "Paste" is greyed out
- Copying from the drive to your Mac works fine, but never the other way around
- The drive shows up in Disk Utility, but Get Info says "read-only"
Your drive isn't broken, and neither is your Mac — the drive is formatted as NTFS (Windows' file system), and macOS can only read NTFS, not write to it. DiskBee is built to solve exactly this: no reformatting, no data loss — install it, plug in your drive, and read-write just works.
Key Features
Plug & Play, Zero System Tweaks
Other NTFS apps on Apple Silicon Macs typically require entering Recovery Mode, lowering system security, and restarting. We skip all of that: install, plug in your drive, and read-write just works — your Mac's security protections stay fully intact.
Full NTFS Read-Write
Mount NTFS drives as writable on macOS. Copy, edit, and delete files without limits — and switch between read-only and read-write mount modes anytime.
Dead Simple to Use
NTFS drives auto-mount as writable the moment you plug in. Open or eject from the menu bar with one click — zero configuration. Live menu bar badges show each disk's read-only, writable, or unmounted status at a glance.
Clean & Safe
No ads, no bundles, and your file contents are never collected. Spec-compliant NTFS writes keep your disk and data safe.
Disk Check & Repair
Dirty volumes are repaired automatically on mount via journal replay. Built-in health and unmount diagnostics, plus a four-level deep check of NTFS structural consistency. Common bookkeeping errors are safely repaired automatically, while deep corruption is guided to Windows chkdsk.
Blazing Fast
A self-developed Rust engine delivers native-level speed with stable large-file transfers.
Read Windows-Compressed Files Directly
NTFS-compressed (Windows-compressed) files read directly without decompression — old drive data works out of the box.
BitLocker Drives, Read & Write
Open company-issue BitLocker drives without a Windows PC: unlock with a password or 48-digit recovery key, and everything you write is encrypted on the fly to the BitLocker standard — the drive works as-is back on Windows. Optional Keychain auto-unlock and read-only mounting.
Disk Speed Test
CrystalDiskMark-style sequential + random 4K four-profile benchmarking, with dual gauges, live speed curves, and IOPS. Three test sizes, plus smart analysis that pinpoints USB 2.0 bottlenecks, SSD cache-exhaustion slowdowns, and abnormal write speeds — with concrete conclusions and fixes.
Pro Disk Toolbox
Format as NTFS, rename volumes, and cleanup of interrupted-copy leftovers — all in one app, with built-in conflicting third-party driver detection and operation logs.

What Users Say
“Plug in and it just works — the disk health diagnostics even flagged failing sectors on a media drive, so I swapped and backed it up before delivery.”
“Honestly didn't expect much, but my 4TB WD drive mounted the second I installed it. Moving client footage now feels no different from an internal SSD.”
“I used to reformat everything to exFAT and lost data twice. This thing saved me from that dumb ritual — wish I'd found it years ago.”
FAQ
Why is my external hard drive or USB flash drive read-only on Mac?
Because the drive is formatted as NTFS, Windows' file system, and macOS only supports reading NTFS by default — not writing. Once you install DiskBee, NTFS drives auto-mount as fully writable: copy, edit, and delete files without limits.
Why can't I drag files onto my drive or create new folders on it?
This is the classic symptom of an NTFS drive mounted read-only on macOS: you can see your files, but every write operation — drag-and-drop, paste, new folder, delete, rename — is blocked by the system. No reformatting needed: install the app and write directly, with all existing data preserved.
Do I have to reformat the drive to exFAT to write to it on Mac?
No. Reformatting to exFAT does enable writing on Mac, but it erases everything on the drive. DiskBee adds native NTFS write support to macOS via a system extension — your data stays exactly as it is, plug and play.
Which systems are supported?
macOS 15.4 or later (including macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27), on both Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4/M5/M6) and Intel Macs. That's the only requirement — no restart, no Recovery Mode, no lowering system security.
Which Mac models are supported? Does it work on MacBook and iMac?
All Apple Silicon and Intel Mac models are supported. As long as you run macOS 15.4 or later, every Mac works: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro — on Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4/M5/M6) and Intel alike. External HDDs and USB flash drives of all brands are supported.
Do Apple Silicon Macs need to enter Recovery Mode and lower security?
No. Legacy NTFS drivers on Apple Silicon require entering Recovery Mode, lowering system security, and restarting before they can work. We skip all of that: install and you're done — your Mac's security protections stay fully intact.
How do I completely uninstall the app?
Choose "Uninstall DiskBee" in the app menu and confirm — the app and its system extension are removed cleanly, with no leftovers and no impact on your disk data. You can also move the app to the Trash and restart your Mac.
What's the difference between the free version and Pro?
The free version offers NTFS read-only access, mount management and BitLocker drive unlock (read-only browse & copy-out) forever — no time limit, no activation required; the website download edition also includes the four-level disk structure check. Activating Pro unlocks full read-write, BitLocker read-write, the disk speed test and volume renaming, and in the website download edition additionally unlocks safe repair, formatting as NTFS and interrupted-copy cleanup. Try the free version first to confirm compatibility, then buy with confidence.
Are my file contents uploaded or collected?
Never. All disk read/write and diagnostics operations run entirely on your Mac — we never collect or upload any file contents, file names, or directory structures from your drives. We only collect the device fingerprint (device SN and UUID) needed to complete transactions, plus device technical info for product improvement that never includes volume names, disk serial numbers, or any file content. See the privacy policy on the Legal page for details.
Is writing to NTFS drives safe? Will it damage my data?
The app writes strictly according to the NTFS specification and adds confirmations and warnings for critical actions like ejecting. Normal use will not harm your disk or data.
Can I get a refund after purchase?
The Software is a digital download and is not covered by unconditional return policies — the free version already offers full read-only access, so please verify compatibility before purchasing. If you encounter an unresolvable quality issue (e.g., activation failure or the Software not functioning), contact support within 7 days of purchase; once our technical team confirms the issue cannot be fixed, the refund is returned via the original payment method.
How many devices can one license activate?
One license binds to a single device (identified by its device fingerprint). Purchase happens inside the app with no email and no license key — activation is automatic once payment succeeds. Reinstalling macOS does not affect activation.
Can I use it offline after activation?
Yes. Your activation status is stored locally, and read/write permission is verified entirely on your Mac with no network involved. Once activated, you can read and write NTFS drives without any internet connection—on a plane, on the road, anywhere. Only the initial activation and device transfers require an internet connection.
What if I switch to a new Mac?
Yes — fully self-service and free. If your old Mac still works: open NTFSProKit on it → Settings → License → "Transfer to a New Mac" to unbind, then activate on the new Mac with the same license key. If the old Mac is lost or broken: in the new Mac's activation window choose "Transfer by order number", then enter the payment order number (found in your payment receipt) and the old Mac's serial number. Each license includes 5 transfers in total; for special cases, contact support at service01@mc-cwin.com.
Is there a limit on device transfers?
Each order includes 5 free self-service transfers in total (one-click unbind on the old Mac plus order-number transfers combined), enough for years of normal upgrades. If you run out, contact support for manual help. Transfers do not reset the 7-day refund window.
If I share my license key, can others activate multiple Macs?
No. A license key is bound to a device's hardware fingerprint (serial number + UUID) and can only be active on one Mac at a time; entering it on another device reports “bound to another device”. Keep your key and order number private — they are also your transfer credentials.
Do I need to buy again after reinstalling macOS or the app?
No. As long as it's the same Mac, open the app and click “Recover purchase & auto-activate” to restore without entering a key (matched by device fingerprint), or re-enter your original key in the activation window.
Why does a freshly formatted NTFS disk show tens of MB already used? Is old data left behind?
No — that's NTFS's own system files, not leftover data. Every NTFS volume pre-creates several system areas at format time: the journal $LogFile (enables recovery after power loss or unsafe ejection, 2–64 MB depending on capacity), the Master File Table $MFT (tracks where every file lives, about 2 MB initially), plus the allocation bitmap $Bitmap and the Unicode upcase table. On a 128 GB disk these total roughly 70 MB; formatting NTFS on Windows shows the same used space. These areas are zeroed during formatting, contain no old data, and don't meaningfully reduce your usable capacity.
Why does it require macOS 15.4 or later? Can older Macs still use it?
The macOS 15.4 requirement is the precondition for building on Apple's official FSKit user-space file system framework (introduced in macOS 15.4): that is exactly why it needs no kernel extension, no SIP disabling, no lowering security in Recovery Mode, no restart after install, and why it survives OS upgrades — while before 15.4 only Apple's deprecated kernel-extension route existed. Any Mac that can upgrade to macOS Sequoia (15) can reach 15.4 and install the app; older Macs that cannot upgrade still read and copy NTFS files for free (macOS reads NTFS natively), and for writing can weigh a kernel-extension solution or offload to a Windows PC.
Does it support BitLocker-encrypted drives?
Yes — unlock and read-write. DiskBee includes a built-in BitLocker engine: enter the password or the 48-digit recovery key to unlock and read-write BitLocker-encrypted NTFS volumes created by Windows 7 and later (XTS-AES 128/256 and AES-CBC compatibility mode). The free tier unlocks the volume for read-only browsing and copying files out; Pro unlocks full read-write. Not supported: BitLocker To Go (encrypted FAT32/exFAT USB sticks), volumes with paused encryption or decryption, and volumes protected only by TPM with no password or recovery key.
Read and write every NTFS drive on your Mac
Read-only access is free forever — upgrade to Pro for full write access when you're ready. Everything runs 100% on your Mac; no file contents are ever collected.
